Rink Rules Nobody Says Out Loud

Everyone circles the same way, and some rinks flip that direction mid-session, so watch the floor before you step on. Raise a hand when you enter or leave the track so people can read you. Never stop in traffic. Nobody gets to choose which way they fall, so don't plan it - get up, then move to the edge. The floor is predictable, and that is what makes a rink the gentlest place to start.
Everyone skates the same direction, and the rink will tell you which one. Going against it is the only thing that genuinely annoys regulars, and it is the easiest rule to follow.
Signal when you come on and when you come off. A raised hand at the edge of the track lets everyone behind you read what you are about to do, which is the one thing traffic cannot guess on its own.
If you need to stop, adjust a skate or catch your breath, get off the track first. And if you fall, nobody gets to choose the direction — trying to steer a fall is what turns it backwards, which is the one landing that really hurts. Get up first, then move to the edge.
